Sesame — Harvesting
Metadata research draftEvidence limits
⚠️ Status: metadata draft. Every DOI below is a candidate metadata record from the survey research/sesame-seeds/report.md — title and identifier only, not screened evidence. The survey’s central warning: “Capsule type, maturity stage, harvest timing, and measured seed loss must be recorded together. Evidence from non-dehiscent mechanized cultivars cannot be transferred to dehiscent household seed without cultivar context” (§3.6). No harvest timing, moisture value, or loss figure is asserted; no harvest-aid or growth-regulator chemical is recommended. Substantive values remain Unknown until S-#### source notes exist (docs/methodology/evidence.md). Not growing advice.
Three maturities — do not merge them
Section titled “Three maturities — do not merge them”- Physiological maturity — the seed has reached full development on the plant (a biological state of the seed).
- Harvest maturity — the plant/capsule state at which cutting or pulling is timed (an operational decision, balancing immature seed against losses).
- Storage-safe drying — the postharvest moisture endpoint that makes the dried seed safe to store (a processing/storage state, reached after harvest).
These are three different decision points and must be recorded separately. Whether a harvested lot needs further drying is Evidence: Unknown until its condition and an accepted storage criterion are known. See
storage.mdandprocessing.md.
Capsule dehiscence vs seed loss — trait vs outcome
Section titled “Capsule dehiscence vs seed loss — trait vs outcome”- Dehiscence is the capsule’s splitting mechanism; seed loss is the quantity measured as lost before, during, and after harvest. Report the mechanism (capsule type) and outcome (measured loss %) separately. The effect of harvest timing for any cultivar remains Evidence: Unknown.
- Measured seed loss in this project — Evidence: Unknown (open question 11, marked “Needs experiment”).
Dehiscent vs non-dehiscent cultivars
Section titled “Dehiscent vs non-dehiscent cultivars”- Candidate records: dehiscence anatomy (
10.1017/s0021859699007364, 2000); inheritance of indehiscent capsule character (10.15832/ankutbd.539005, 2019); high-density SNP mapping of capsule shattering (10.3389/fpls.2021.679659, 2021); dehiscent vs indehiscent capsule comparison (10.1016/j.fochms.2024.100231, 2024); capsule/seed development (10.9734/ijecc/2020/v10i430189, 2020) — survey §3.6. - The transfer rule (banner) means: a timing or loss result from a non-dehiscent mechanized system is unusable for dehiscent household seed unless cultivar and capsule type match. Capsule type of any local cultivar — Evidence: Unknown (open question 2).
Timing candidates
Section titled “Timing candidates”- Sowing date × harvest time (
10.20546/ijcmas.2023.1202.011, 2023; survey §3.7) — timing interacts with sowing date; the record’s conditions and results are unread. - Harvest-aid drydown/maturity (
10.5772/intechopen.91011, 2020; survey §3.7) and growth-regulator treatments vs capsule dehiscence (10.1016/s0378-4290(99)00076-3, 2000; survey §3.6) — chemical-treatment candidates, metadata only. No product, dose, or use is recommended or implied. - Visible maturity indicators that minimize the immature-seed vs shattering tradeoff — Evidence: Unknown (open question 9).
Manual harvest and post-cut handling
Section titled “Manual harvest and post-cut handling”- The machinery candidates below are mechanized, and the survey states they “do not answer household cutting, bundling, hand threshing, winnowing, labor, and loss questions. Those remain
Unknown/Needs experiment” (§3.7). - Cutting/pulling, bundling, and shock/stook drying practice; labor-hours per kg of clean seed (open question 10); tools and screens (open question 12) — Evidence: Unknown. Experiment E2 (staged harvest: capsule maturity, shattering, recovered clean seed) is the designed instrument.
Threshing and cleaning (mechanized candidates)
Section titled “Threshing and cleaning (mechanized candidates)”- Sesame-thresher development/evaluation (
10.31018/jans.v13isi.2824, 2021); adaptation of threshing equipment (10.1088/1755-1315/1290/1/012015, 2024); adaptation of grain-cleaning equipment (10.3390/agriengineering7060179, 2025) — survey §3.7. These establish that mechanized threshing/cleaning R&D exists; they say nothing about hand methods, and their loss figures (unread) would not transfer anyway. Household side continues inprocessing.md.
Losses
Section titled “Losses”- Loss routes to record separately: pre-harvest shatter from dehiscence; pest loss (e.g., sesame seed bug,
pests-diseases.md— pest loss is not dehiscence loss); cutting/bundling handling loss; threshing and cleaning loss; and post-harvest spillage. Each — Evidence: Unknown until measured; E3 (manual harvest → drying → threshing → cleaning benchmark) measures them together with time and mass.
Screening priority and corpus limits
Section titled “Screening priority and corpus limits”- The survey flags capsule-development evidence as thinner than shattering genetics (§7) — a direct problem for the maturity-indicator question (open question 9), which needs development-stage evidence more than breeding history. The capsule/seed development candidate (
10.9734/ijecc/2020/v10i430189) and the dehiscence anatomy record (10.1017/s0021859699007364) are therefore the highest-value screening targets on title. - The thresher and cleaner records (
10.31018/jans.v13isi.2824,10.1088/1755-1315/1290/1/012015,10.3390/agriengineering7060179) rank lower for this project: mechanized systems, whose results would need cultivar and scale translation even after full-text review.
Small-scale relevance
Section titled “Small-scale relevance”- Harvest concentrates the dossier’s household-scale unknowns: when to cut by visible cue, whether/how to dry bundles, and how to thresh and winnow small lots. E2 and E3 are proposed experiments; the current metadata does not answer them.
- The effect of harvest weather, including rain during any bundle-drying stage — Evidence: Unknown.
- Proposed E2 observation template: log capsule color and opening state by plant zone, date, weather, harvest method, and recovered clean-seed mass so cultivar/capsule context stays attached to any measured loss.
