Sesame — Storage

Metadata research draftEvidence limits

⚠️ Status: metadata draft. Every DOI below is a candidate metadata record from the survey research/sesame-seeds/report.md — title and identifier only, not screened evidence. The survey’s rule: “Planting-seed viability, edible-seed quality, insect loss, mold/mycotoxin risk, and oil oxidation are different endpoints and must not be merged” (§3.8). No moisture target, container, temperature, shelf life, or safety threshold is asserted. Substantive values remain Unknown until S-#### source notes exist (docs/methodology/evidence.md). Not food-safety advice.

  1. Planting-seed viability (germination after storage — sowing value).
  2. Edible-seed quality (food value of the stored seed).
  3. Insect loss (stored-product pests consuming/contaminating seed).
  4. Mold/mycotoxin risk (fungal growth and toxin accumulation under poor storage).
  5. Oil oxidation (rancidity of extracted oil — a different product entirely).

Evidence: Known (definitional list; survey §3.8). Every numeric value for each endpoint — Evidence: Unknown.

Storage-safe drying is not harvest maturity

Section titled “Storage-safe drying is not harvest maturity”
  • Storage condition is assessed separately from physiological and harvest maturity (harvesting.md). Whether a lot requires further postharvest drying and the acceptable endpoint are Evidence: Unknown; open question 14 tracks both. storage.target_moisture_pct is null in data/crops/sesame.yaml.
  • Storage life under humid tropical conditions (10.15258/sst.2008.36.2.11, 2008); physiological seed quality during storage (10.1590/s1806-66902014000100017, 2014); environmental factors, storage periods, quality, and longevity (10.1186/s43170-024-00247-w, 2024; 37 citation edges) — survey §3.8. Title-level candidates: their conditions and results are unread, so no moisture, temperature, or shelf-life value follows.
  • Storage technologies, pest infestation, and postharvest loss (10.1016/j.jspr.2023.102161, 2023); stored-seed insect dynamics and losses (10.1007/s42690-024-01179-8, 2024) — survey §3.8. These concern infestation of stored seed, a different problem from the field pests in pests-diseases.md — different organisms, different timing, different countermeasures. storage.pest_risk is unknown.
  • No stored-pest control method (nor any chemical) is recommended here.
  • The dossier records seed intended for food and seed intended for sowing as separate lot purposes because their endpoints differ (edible quality/safety vs viability). A suitable household storage method for either purpose remains Evidence: Unknown; experiment E4 compares both.

Mold, mycotoxins, and the safety boundary (not prescriptions)

Section titled “Mold, mycotoxins, and the safety boundary (not prescriptions)”
  • Boundary candidates, survey §5: storage structures, mold, and mycotoxin accumulation (10.3390/toxins15010039, 2023); on-farm stored-sesame mycotoxins (10.3390/agriculture14030372, 2024); fresh/stored sesame mycobiota and aflatoxin B1 (10.4315/jfp-21-060, 2021); value-chain food-safety review (10.1016/j.heliyon.2024.e36347, 2024); Salmonella contamination/inactivation in imported sesame seed (10.4081/ijfs.2021.8914, 2021); sesame seed/oil allergens (10.1111/j.1398-9995.1996.tb02141.x, 1996).
  • These define handling boundaries only. The survey asserts “no home-processing safety thresholds” and requires “authoritative jurisdiction-specific allergen, microbial, mycotoxin, residue, and sanitation guidance” (§5). This page therefore makes no safety recommendation — not for drying, containers, inspection, or discard decisions.
  • Extracted oil is a separate stored product from seed. A processing/storage stability candidate exists (10.1007/s11746-997-0159-0, 1997; survey §3.9), but home shelf life, container, and rancidity behavior of small-press oil — Evidence: Unknown. See processing.md.
  • Highest household relevance by title: the storage-technology/pest-infestation record (10.1016/j.jspr.2023.102161, 2023), the stored-seed insect dynamics record (10.1007/s42690-024-01179-8, 2024), the environmental-factors/longevity record (10.1186/s43170-024-00247-w, 2024; 37 citation edges), and the humid-tropical storage record (10.15258/sst.2008.36.2.11, 2008). Their conditions must be read before any transfer to a Mexican household.
  • Household storage can be evaluated against two distinct endpoints: edible-seed quality/safety and planting-seed viability. The effect of humidity, container, insects, and duration in the intended setting is Evidence: Unknown. E4 is the proposed household comparison.
  • Storage-safe drying endpoint (moisture) — Evidence: Unknown (open question 14).
  • Shelf life at room temperature, container choice, and pest-proofing method — Evidence: Unknown (all storage fields are null or unknown).
  • Stored-pest organisms present locally and their loss rates — Evidence: Unknown.
  • Planting-seed viability retention vs food quality over time — Evidence: Unknown; Evidence: Needs experiment (E4).
  • Authoritative local safety guidance (allergen, microbial, mycotoxin, residue) — Evidence: Unknown; must come from jurisdiction-specific authorities, not this dossier (survey §5; open question 15).
