Sesame — Planting

Metadata research draftEvidence limits

⚠️ Status: metadata draft. Every DOI below is a candidate metadata record from the survey research/sesame-seeds/report.md — title and identifier only, not screened evidence. The germination and spacing records are controlled experiments whose conditions, locations, and results are unread; no sowing depth, spacing, density, rate, or calendar date is asserted. Substantive values remain Unknown until S-#### source notes exist (docs/methodology/evidence.md). Not growing advice.

  • Propagated by seed. Evidence: Known (structural; planting.propagation_methods in data/crops/sesame.yaml). Direct-sowing details, transplant feasibility, and germination-days range — Evidence: Unknown.
  • Temperature and presoaking effects on germination (10.1016/0098-8472(95)00013-x, 1995; survey §3.2) — a controlled-germination candidate. No germination-temperature range may be quoted from it.
  • Hydrothermal-time germination response to temperature and water potential (10.1007/s11738-017-2549-8, 2017) — a model-framework candidate; model parameters for any cultivar or region — Evidence: Unknown.
  • What these establish: germination response to temperature and water is a studied question. What they do not establish: any household seedbed prescription. planting.germination_days remains null.
  • A 2019 emergence model links temperature, soil bulk density, and sowing depth (10.1016/j.indcrop.2019.111770; survey §3.2). Title-level candidate only — the modeled depths, soils, and emergence results are unverified, so no depth range follows. planting.seeding_depth_cm remains null. See soil.md.
  • A 2020 row-spacing response candidate from semi-arid regions (10.13189/ujar.2020.080402; survey §3.2). Semi-arid field-trial framing; row spacing, plant density, and seeding rate for a garden bed — Evidence: Unknown (all planting spacing/density/rate fields null).
  • Open question 5 and experiment E1 test how density relates to branching, capsule number, weed competition, lodging, and manual access; the direction and balance remain Evidence: Unknown.
  • Planting-date effects on growth and development (10.2134/agronj1987.00021962007900040024x, 1987; survey §3.2) — coverage note only; the locations and dates tested are unread.
  • Sowing date also threads through three other pages: flowering/photoperiod (climate.md, biology.md), webworm pressure (pests-diseases.md, 10.1186/s40066-018-0190-4), and sowing-date × harvest-time interaction (harvesting.md, 10.20546/ijcmas.2023.1202.011). A date choice is therefore not separable from cultivar and pest context — and no date is recommended here.
  • Seed used for sowing is a distinct lot-purpose from seed used for food: planting seed must germinate (viability endpoint); food seed must meet edible-quality and safety endpoints (survey §3.8). Store, handle, and evaluate them separately — see storage.md.
  • Whether locally purchased food seed is viable planting stock — Evidence: Unknown; treats open question 1.
  • When values eventually arrive they will use the project conventions — depth and spacing in cm, density in plants/m², seeding rate in g/m² (docs/methodology/units.md) — each with evidence level, conditions, and source id. None exists yet.
  • The two most household-relevant planting candidates on title are the emergence model (temperature × bulk density × sowing depth, 10.1016/j.indcrop.2019.111770) and the hydrothermal-time germination record (10.1007/s11738-017-2549-8): both address establishment reliability, the small grower’s first risk. Both need full-text review before any depth, date, or moisture statement.
  • The planting-date record (10.2134/agronj1987.00021962007900040024x, 1987) requires explicit cultivar, environment, and date review; its year alone gives no assurance of present local applicability.
  • A household sowing decision bundles five unknowns at once: depth, spacing, density, date, and seed lot quality. None has a transferable number yet; E1 (small-plot spacing/density comparison with emergence and branching records) is the designed way to generate the first local evidence.
  • The practical effect of seed size, depth placement, and seedbed fineness remains Evidence: Unknown; the emergence-model candidate is a screening lead, not a recommendation.
  • Germination temperature range and germination days for any obtainable cultivar — Evidence: Unknown (open question 4).
  • Sowing depth and seedbed conditions for reliable emergence — Evidence: Unknown.
  • Spacing/density balance (branching, capsules, weeds, lodging, manual access) — Evidence: Unknown; Evidence: Needs experiment (E1).
  • Sowing window for the target latitude under local photoperiod — Evidence: Unknown (open question 3).
