Dry Beans — Storage

Metadata research draftEvidence limits

⚠️ Status: drafted from the literature survey. Values Unknown until source notes/full text.

  • Beans must be fully dry before storage (sun-dried traditionally; relevant for Mexico frijol). Drying method/target moisture Unknown (see moisture and processing.md).
  • Safe storage moisture is critical. Dry / ultra-dry storage studied (candidate 10.15258/sst.2007.35.1.15 — pepper, bean, cowpea, others); moisture × temperature for pinto beans (10.1016/j.jspr.2012.11.003).
  • Airtight, pest-proof (sealed tins/jars/glass; insect exclusion is key as the weevil is an outdoor-resident). Recommend at room temp — Unknown.
  • Cool, dry; room-temp viability for resowing Unknown.
  • Bean weevil / bruchid (Acanthoscealides obtectus) — the principal storage pest (Mexican bean weevil). Tight-sealing/exclusion is the practical small-scale defense. Hard pest_risk high.
  • Food vs seed viability shelf life — Unknown.
  • Improper storage → hard-to-cook (bean type/moisture/blanch/storage time: 10.1111/j.1365-2621.1979.tb03796.x). A signature dry-bean storage-quality concern.
  • Feeds storage.* + pest_risk in data/crops/dry-beans.yaml.
