Moringa — Biology
Metadata research draftEvidence limits
⚠️ Status: drafted from the literature survey (research/moringa/report.md). The points below are paper-existence/coverage notes, not numeric claims. All Unknown until source notes and full-text claims are registered (see docs/methodology/evidence.md).
Identity and taxonomy
Section titled “Identity and taxonomy”- Family: Moringaceae; the crop of this dossier is Moringa oleifera Lam. Evidence: Known (basic taxonomy).
- History/taxonomy/propagation review candidate:
10.21276/ssr-iijls.2019.5.3.7(2019). Diversity/breeding/in-vitro review candidate:10.3390/plants11223132(2022) — its title carries promotional language; evaluate critically and do not inherit its claims. - Other Moringa species appear only marginally in the retrieved set (e.g., Moringa peregrina in a saline-irrigation germination study,
10.22587/aeb.2018.12.3.3, 2018). Species-level comparison with M. oleifera:Unknown.
Growth habit
Section titled “Growth habit”- Fast-growing perennial tree. Height, crown form, and lifespan:
Unknownuntil sources. - Growth/biomass under Northeast Mexico conditions exists as a candidate (
10.54167/tch.v10i3.177, 2016) — the most direct Mexico lead in the sweep; numbers await full text.
Production systems — the central distinction
Section titled “Production systems — the central distinction”Moringa is managed under at least three distinct systems, and evidence does not transfer between them:
- Perennial household tree — one or a few garden trees kept for mixed household leaf/pod/seed use. Candidates specific to this system are thin; management values
Unknown. - Orchard — trees managed as a planting for pods/seeds (and leaf). A postharvest/socio-economic appraisal of orchards exists as a candidate (
10.5376/ijh.2017.07.0030, 2017). - High-density leaf stand — dense planting cut repeatedly for leaf biomass. The strongest candidate thread: density × harvest interval (
10.1155/2017/2941432, 2017), density × harvest frequency (10.17660/actahortic.2017.1158.12, 2017), cutting frequency × spacing (10.17957/ijab/15.0076, 2015), provenance × spacing × cutting interval (10.1080/00128325.2018.1511174, 2019). - Perennial tree/orchard systems and repeatedly cut high-density leaf systems are different production systems: their density, pruning, labor, and yield evidence must stay separate (report §5).
Propagation and germination
Section titled “Propagation and germination”- Seed-based propagation dominates the candidate set: seed priming (
10.3906/tar-1103-39, 2012), temperature effect on germination and seedling growth (10.15258/sst.2011.39.1.19, 2011), pre-sowing seed treatments (10.17660/actahortic.2017.1158.18, 2017). - Seed maturity and desiccation tolerance (
10.15258/sst.2009.37.3.08, 2009) links seed biology to propagation success. - Vegetative and in-vitro propagation are reviewed in
10.3390/plants11223132(2022); practical household-scale vegetative propagation:Unknown. - Germination percentages, priming recipes, and treatment timings:
Unknownuntil full text.
Flowering, pods, and seed
Section titled “Flowering, pods, and seed”- Pruning intensity, flowering, and fruit development under sub-optimal growing conditions in Gauteng, South Africa — candidate
10.1016/j.sajb.2019.11.033(2019); a bridge between tree management and reproductive biology. - Phenology (flowering age/season, pod (“drumstick”) development, seed maturation timing):
Unknown. The retrieved metadata is dominated by leaf-production studies; pod/seed threads are thinner (report §4). - Seed storage behavior is a separate candidate thread — see
storage.md.
Crop outputs (food use as output, not health advice)
Section titled “Crop outputs (food use as output, not health advice)”- Leaves (fresh, dried, powder), immature pods, mature seeds, and seed oil are the crop outputs; each is a separate output with separate yield accounting.
- Seed-oil potential across Moringa species — candidate
10.3390/agriculture8100150(2018). Household-scale pressing economics:Unknown. - Leaf-powder quality as affected by harvest/postharvest handling is a candidate (
10.1088/1755-1315/1038/1/012074, 2022) — belongs inharvesting.md/processing.md. - Nutritional/antinutritional candidates (e.g.,
10.1016/s0377-8401(96)01023-1, 1996) are collected only as food-safety/processing cautions after full-text review. This dossier makes no medical or therapeutic claims.
Open questions → open-questions.md
Section titled “Open questions → open-questions.md”- A clean comparison between the perennial household tree, the orchard, and the high-density leaf stand does not yet exist (report §6) — Needs experiment.
- Flowering/pod/seed phenology under Mexico conditions; vegetative propagation at household scale; self-seeding/invasiveness biology.
